Pregnant and Worried About Dilated Cervix
I am 26 weeks pregnant and was told in the doctor's office that "the outer entrance to my uterus" was dilated (opened) 2-3 centimeters.
Please explain this to me. I didnt now there were two openings to the uterus. And, if this is possible what does this mean
Our answer...
Thanks for writing. The neck of the uterus that opens into the vagina is called the cervix. The cervix allows the passage of menstrual blood out of the uterus during your period and sperm to enter the uterus after sex. During pregnancy, the cervix is filled with a mucus plug (it looks like whitish-yellow snot). This plug seals off the uterus from bacteria, etc. to keep your developing baby safe for any possible infection.
In order for the baby to be born, your cervix has to open or dilate. When fully dilated, the cervix will be around 10 centimeters (about 4 inches in diameter - there are 2 1/2 centimeters per inch). This allows the baby to pass into the vagina.
From what I gather, the doctor found that the outer opening of the cervix (the one that can be seen in the vagina is open about 2-3 centimeters (around an inch). The other end of the cervix, the one on the uterus end cannot be seen by the doctor.
This dilation of your cervix might be a bit premature, but is something that should not cause you panic. As long as the cervix remains like that and you do not pass the mucus plug, everything should be fine.
If the cervix continues to dilate, they may have to deliver the baby early. Doctors do not want to deliver a premature baby because, hould that happen, there is a risk of complications. Follow your doctor's orders and see your doctor on a regular basis.
At this point, I would not worry, but I would be aware of the potential for a premature labor and delivery.
Hope this helps alleviate your fears. If you have any more questions, please ask and also ask your doctor. Good luck with your pregnancy and baby!
